Convert JPG to PNG
Drop images to convert them to PNG, JPG or WebP right here in your browser. It works with JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF, handles batches, and nothing is uploaded.
This browser is too old for in-page conversion. Use a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Settings apply to the next conversion.
All conversion runs in this tab. To check, turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and convert a file, or open DevTools > Network and watch for uploads (there are none).
Your images are converted inside this browser tab and never uploaded. Converted files have camera data and GPS location removed. Converting a JPG to PNG keeps it exactly as it is but cannot restore detail; converting to JPG adds a little compression. Keep your originals.
HEIC decoding: heic-to (LGPL-3.0), built on libheif.
How it works
Drop your images and pick PNG, JPG or WebP. Your browser decodes each file, draws it on a canvas and saves it in the new format. Nothing leaves your device, and each file gets its own download button.
How we convert it
Open "What happened" under any file to see these nine steps for that file.
- Detected from bytes. We read the first bytes, not the file name. JPG starts
FF D8 FF. PNG starts89 50 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A. WebP isRIFF…WEBP. HEIC and AVIF are told apart by theirftypbrand. - Decoded by. Your browser decodes JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP. HEIC uses Safari's built-in decoder where it exists. Elsewhere, the heic-to decoder (libheif) loads on this page only when a HEIC file arrives.
- Size. Width and height stay the same. The one exception: iPhones and iPads can't handle images over about 16.8 megapixels in the browser, so larger images are scaled down to fit, and the file says so.
- Transparency. PNG and WebP keep it. JPG has none, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you pick (white by default). Each pixel is blended over that colour: result = colour × alpha + background × (1 − alpha).
- Encoded with.
canvas.toBlobwith the format you chose. For JPG and WebP it also gets your quality setting, divided by 100 (90 becomes 0.90). PNG has no quality setting because it is lossless. - Browser returned. We check the file type the browser actually produced. If it doesn't match what you asked for, we show an error instead of handing you a mislabelled file.
- Metadata. Camera data, GPS location and the colour profile are not copied. Wide-colour iPhone photos may look slightly less saturated.
- Orientation. The camera's rotation tag is applied first, so portrait photos stay upright.
- Bytes. Input and output sizes in exact bytes, plus the change. A JPG to PNG is often 2 to 10 times larger. That is normal for a lossless format.
Animated GIF, WebP, PNG and AVIF files keep only the first frame. 16-bit PNGs are saved as 8-bit per channel.
Next steps: compress the JPG to a size in KB, resize the image to exact pixels, or combine photos into one PDF.
Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel of the JPG exactly as it is now, compression blur included. It cannot add back detail the JPG already lost. That is also why the PNG is usually several times larger. The tool shows both sizes for every file.
Will converting to PNG make the background transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so a white background stays white pixels in the PNG. To make it transparent you need a background-removal tool. Going the other way, a transparent PNG saved as JPG gets a solid background. You can pick its colour here.
My image saved as .webp. Can I just rename it to .jpg?
Renaming changes the name, not the data inside, so many programs will still refuse to open it. Drop the file here and pick JPG or PNG. The tool reads the real format from the first bytes of the file, and tells you if the name and the contents disagree.
How do I convert many iPhone HEIC photos to JPG at once on Windows?
Drag them all in (up to 50 at a time), choose JPG, press Convert, then use "Download all (.zip)". It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, and in Safari 17 or later on a Mac or iPhone. Photos are turned upright, and GPS location is removed.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Every file is converted inside this browser tab. To check, load the page, turn off Wi-Fi and convert a JPG. It still works. You can also open DevTools, go to the Network tab and watch: no upload request is sent.
